Tutorial. Tracks in the grasslands.

1. Set out the map  and decide where the track will run.

2. Lay the dummy layer as the texture that the track will be on most of the time. This will serve to    keep the frame speeds down when we load the dynamics and set them out as far as the veiw distance.

3. Load a texture for the track boundary with the same first texture as the dummy, and use a different texture for the second texture layer. What we are going to do is change the second texture  on the boundary after we finish... to the same as the dummy so both dummy and boundry will end up the same. The boundary layer will prevent the dynamics on the dummy from loading right across the track line.

4. Load a texture for the track.

5. Turn on the wire frame and  proceed to lay the boundary tex all the way along the track line taking in three wire frame lines wide along the the track.
Try to keep most of the track along the north/south and East/west lines as the 45 lines  do not have a very good definition so its best to use it sparingly to ease the corners

6. Now come back along the line and lay the track texture along the centre wire frame line.

7. Add dynamic grass to the dummy layer. grass green ilinois dyn is a high density grass that uses low frame rates, and the winter version is about the same if not better.

8. Load the same grass model as an object and go along the track placing the objects to fill in along the bare boundary layer and position them to form and close in the two sides of the track. This will take a while. A few hours at the least.

9. Load the same grass in its singe plant form ( use both the models available ) and place them along the centre line of the track. Set the size range of the models to give a good variation in appearance.  Dead straight is not important and will look unnatural anyway. Bend the line through the corners for effect.
This will take forever. Right click ,click, click , click, click, click.........................................................
hence the need for adequate supplies of liquid refressment and frequent  breaks to prevent cramp in the right mouse finger. ( RSI.. Repetitive Strain Injury )

10. When its finaly done change the second texture layer on the boundry texture so that the dummy and the boundry now have the same textures.

11. Now load any extra bushes, branches, stones etc on the ground and along the track using either dynamics or the object placer, If using the object placer go back along the track and clear any misplaced objects,

The last thing to do is go in the map and check the frame speeds. You may have to fiddle with the densities and view distances to get the frame speeds up. Get the dynamic grass out as far as you can so that it continues to the full veiw distance.The shrubs and other objects are not so important but if the dynamic grass is not way out the effect is crap. (Try turning down the ground objects setting to low.. to see what I mean.)

Its a long drawn out and time consuming exercise. There will be other grass combinations to use but finding plant and grass models that can be loaded at high densities and long veiw distances is critical to making it work.


Old Hunters never die.They just sit around the campfire and tell the biggest lies.
