So I purchased a new HDD to put windows XP on just for mapping because I was about to throw my windows7 machine out the window.

I've run into a problem, I have a downloaded version of DH2005 that I purchased a while back and the company I purchased it from no longer exists... so...I install the game, it says it's a trial and I have 30 days left, but when I click on "Already Paid. Click Here" link, it's broken and the site has changed ownership. Any suggestions on how to retrieve my key from my installed game on my other computer? Thanks! Mad

Drwhitetail....     1.  Do you have a Flash Drive,Thumb Drive?  You can copy small bits of data on your USB port to the thumb Drive and transfer the data from computer to computer.  2.  You can E-mail it from computer to computer to yourself.   3.  External hard drive.   Copy to External hard drive..........       Please Explain the exact situation about what type of key.    Most game keys are not stand alone...If you can find it in the files of the installed game.  DL's are in the registration from that site and work only if requesting to re-install the game again.  If the site is not up and running your copy is practically useless. transferring the whole game to the Hard drive would not work it would have to be installed for directories on windows.    Maybe if you could get a Disc version would solve all your problems.                                 Gas56

I purchased DH2005 a couple of years ago from here:

I originally downloaded it just to try it, found I liked it, and then purchased it. The download is the full game but the trial is for 30 days. Basically, when you start the game up, a window pops up telling you it's a trial, it has a button to purchase. Once you purchase it, it unlocks the trial and that window no longer pops up. I still have the original installer, so what I did was just burned all of my mapping stuff and the installer onto a DVD to transfer to this new drive.

Once I installed it and tried to run it, the trial thing popped up (because I'm on a new hdd). When I try to click any of the options (either buy or the one that says I already purchased), it gives me an error stating I need to be connected to the internet. When I found my receipt in my email and tried clicking on the links they provided, they all are now being forwarded to a different website. About a year ago, I was able to activate the game on my laptop and it said I had 4 remaining activations left.

I emailed the company, because I see that DFG is still around, and here was the response I got:

"Unfortunately a number of things have happened since you purchased the game:

1) Atari, who owns the rights to the game, pulled it out of digital distribution
2) Trymedia, who handled the digital download and order processing for that game, was shut down by the company that bought them (Real Networks)

Real Networks does not provide us with any customer support any longer for anyone who bought games through our partnership with them so unfortunately I can't do anything to help you get that game back Sad  I know that really stinks and I wish there was something I could do.  Its not very fun when businesses make changes (or just stop doing business) and don't support their past customers."

So...because I can no longer buy the game (which I don't want to do…again), I was wondering if anyone knew if there was a game key file or anything that I could transfer over from my working game to unlock the trial.

Maybe this is a sign for me to finally hang this game up…I've spent countless hours trying to get the editor to work in Win7, and then more hours trying to get my new XP drive to boot (running a machine with several different operating systems), and then when I finally was able to slipstream drivers into my XP install disc and get the operating system running, I can't even use the game I purchased! Have you tried looking in your registry to see if it might have copied it there

Hmm, I have not because I don't know much about regedit or how to use it. I don't know what to look for or what to do with it if I find it.  Wink

Did you try using the Windows easy file transfer process built into your operating system .
Go to start .. all programs.. accessories
and look for windows easy file transfer... or similar ... and run that program on your old computer. Limit the files to those you want to move,  then transfer the folder to your new com and install there on the new hard drive..

This is a standard windows program specifically designed to transfer personal files from your old computer to a new one.

Hope it works.

As I suggested earlier,  purchacing a DH2005 disc would solve your problems.    Transferring files from computer to computer will not work.  As said earlier you have to install a program to make directories work right on a operating system.  The Key word is Directories.  To manipulate with any "key code" you have to bypass the original written code with one that lets you run the game. I know the disc is ridiculously climbing $$$$$ for it. Alternative is searching the net.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I'll just try to finish my couple maps on my XP HDD and then just send my maps over to my other HDD to test. This little problem has become a huge nightmare and I've spent so much time and $ on it that I'm pretty certain I'm going to call it quits when I finish these 2 maps that are half done. Thanks for the help though, it's sincerely appreciated! Smile -> Deer Hunter 2005
