Recently some of our members have been taking our maps, and uploading them to other site(s), without ours' (Hagadoo.com) or the map makers permission. This is strictly forbidden & if you are caught, you will be banned, no questions asked! I can redo our map section so that only trusted members of the site have access to our Down load section. This has good & bad points though. Please take the poll at the top, Its very simple, do you want me to restrict our Download section, Yes or No?
Just so you know, Hagadoo is the Biggest & Best site out there. There are others that would dream about having our hunt numbers, and to have their forums as active as ours. I want to keep this site in the fore front & number 1! I will not allow people to come here and steal our content, to improve their site.

Please post your thoughts & feeling
I have had even textures that I personally created on my computer , pilfered as it were and it is very aggravating..... I have borrowed other peoples objects to use in my maps but try and credit them if I post a map at another site. The Only sites that have permission to post any of my maps is BGL , Hagadoo and of course OTB . Restricting downloads is one way to lessen this but Magnum is right in what he said about legally there is nothing that can be done. the site mentioned the .net one I believe to be a hackers site and if you frequent that site they will probably eventually hack your computer. Ray is right in saying "Just so you know, Hagadoo is the Biggest & Best site out there. There are others that would dream about having our hunt numbers, and to have their forums as active as ours." and jealosy is sometimes the reason they pick on good sites. BTW permisson was never granted for that site to post OTB maps either.

I specifically make my maps for the MEMBERS of HAGADOO to hunt and enjoy, that is why I joined Hagadoo, Because it is the best, with the best people. I went to that .net site and did find 2 of my maps listed there (without mine or hagadoos permission). If it means restricting downloads, maybe that's what should be done. as long as the TRUSTED members are still free to d/l.

The one thing I told REZ is why should a group be punished for the actions of a few(unless you are a demoncrat ) So many people asked to host my tutorial on their sites, that I don't even remember who I gave permission to anymore. The reason I let them use it is because I made it for the community to enjoy just like my maps. The only reason these people want these maps is so they can get a free mod, which from my understanding he is no longer doing. I could be wrong tho. Personally I say let the downloads stay as they are and we can monitor who is doing what.

Magnum & I did have a conversation about this. I always believe in rewarding the good, & punishing the bad. I do not feel if I restrict the downloads, it will punish a group of members because of the actions of a few. What it would do, is allow our loyal site members to continue to D/L maps at there leisure, and stop new members that never contribute content from taking our content. If new members would want to be on the list to D/L our maps, then I would aspect them to support & contribute to our forums and join in our weekly hunts.
As the steward of this site, site members entrust me with there custom content that they allow us to host. By doing so, they put their faith in me, that I will allow it to be used for the fun of this site, and any other site that they allow to host there content. If I would allow it to go all over the web, uncontrolled, then in time, they might stop providing new custom content to the site.
I want to start a new group called "Friends of Hagadoo". It will be a list of all our weekly hunters & supporters as well as trusted members in the community that we all have known over the many years of hunting. A name can easily be added with a click of the mouse, the same goes for removal. This is not a done deal yet though, I would like your feed back, for and against this subject, as well as what the poll says about the pulse of our community.

As some of you may know myself and CrystalWolf did have our own site called {CWH} (CrytalWolf Hunters). We also had problems with other sites directly linking the maps we had there or downloading and reposting. Lots of Spazes , KY Buckmasters , CWs and a few other peoples as well as my own maps. There was not alot we could do and theres not alot you can do without a large pocketbook to stop the illegal posting. It is a tough decission to make with the downloads of maps,,make it so only a few can download them or everyone? I believe even if you do make it so only a few trusted people can download there is still a chance that these untrusted people can still obtain access to the maps one way or another. With either choice you make im sure it will be the right one.

I think I like the idea of monitoring who does what, rather than restricting the D/L secton to just a few.....I was totally intimidated by the hunting here, (when Jesse & Mossy always won) and it took them leaving for me to even think about joining in. I hunted the site maps solo, and when I felt like I had at least a chance, then I got in. I can't have been the only one.....Don't forget that some of you guys scare the heck out of the average hunter!

I already gave my opinion of restricting the downloads. The best you can do is limit the downloads to members. When it comes down to it, only the creators of the maps can take any action with copyright infringement, legal or otherwise. If somebody wants the maps bad enough, they are going to get them some way or another. Everybody who creates digital content takes a chance on others stealing it the second it gets posted on the net.

I am new to this site, and to the idea of hunting game sites and online hunting, but I have enjoyed hunting games since I was young, back in the days of Windows 98 and Sunstorm's Deer Hunter 2. Until a few months ago, I had not even thought about custom maps for hunting games, but I have now become a member of Big Game Lodge, from which I have downloaded the map editor. After trying to make some maps of my own, I have gained a new respect for map makers, and I have also learned that to make a good map, a lot of time and effort has to be committed. However, some people do not have enough free time make a decent map, other than a slaughter map, and it does add a lot to the hunt as well as make it more interesting and enjoyable to have a new map to explore and hunt on. I personally greatly enjoy hunting in all types of hunting games, and oftentimes, I spend at least an hour a day enjoying them, but after trying a few custom maps, I find it more interesting and challenging to hunt on maps that I do not know every inch of, as well as every move the deer or animal is going to make. It is for this reason, among others, that I think that websites that offer custom data for download are so popular. I also believe that those people who take the time to make a custom map or file and upload it on the internet, do so for other people to enjoy and appreciate. However, while I think that it is important to protect the rights of those individuals who take the time to make our hunt more enjoyable, I also think that those maps and files were made and uploaded with the intent that everyone should enjoy them, giving proper respect to the time dedicated to create them and to the people who make it possible for others to share what they have made. Because of this, I think that to limit the ability of their makers to share them with everyone who wishes to hunt with these files and maps, despite whether each individual prefers to hunt online or not, would be to cheat the purpose for which they are made. As the former posts have stated, if someone wishes to pirate a digital file, it would be impractical to stop them beyond the normal precautions, whether the downloading of these files is restricted to certain people or not, as there are many ways around passwords and firewalls as is testified by the yearly release of some new software to prevent hackers. If someone wanted to pirate these files, there is probably little that can be done to stop them, but, by limiting the downloading to select people, it makes it almost discouraging for the new hunter, often compelling him to look elsewhere for a more open site. I have seen a great many websites, and built some myself, and have found that a well organized, open, and easy to use website is more likely to flourish than one that is hard to navigate and is closed and uninviting to newcomers and/or charges fees for the use of certain functions that it offers. After discovering the existence of custom maps, and downloading and trying them from BGL to the point of exhausting their list of available downloads(and playing them to a complete exhaustion of all challenge), I personally spent a great deal of time looking around for some more websites that do not charge for the downloads that they offer, and that are open for new members to freely participate in its forums and functions. Due to my personal experiences, and from watching other people and sites, I have begun to believe that this is what other users are looking for as well. As for limiting the downloads to select people who contributed to this website, I think that this can be a little to strict and restricting to new hunters/members, because as I have stated before, it takes a lot of time to make a custom map/object, and some people wish to spend this time hunting, enjoying and learning their game, rather than trying to make something that they will probably not get much of a chance to enjoy if they feel that they must make more maps and files in order to be accepted into the list of approved. It is also hard for someone who is new to the game to contribute a great deal in the forums, as they need more help than they can give. And as for joining the weekly hunts, I would think that most other people are at least somewhat similar to myself, in that they enjoy hunting whenever they can find the free time to do so, and to make the free time required for a hunt on a set schedule on a regular basis can become a challenge. (Please forgive me if I am being to presumptuous here, as I do not have much experience with online play, and I am assuming that it is the same/similar to other multiplayer games that are played online were games take place at a certain day and time.) Hence, having said all this, while I can see where REZ325 is coming from, and can definitely sympathize with the people whose things are pirated, (having experienced the same myself in other things), I do think that it would defeat the purpose of displaying downloads publicly if they are not offered to be enjoyed in the same open manner. If the download is being pirated for the purpose of personal gain (selling) then that person is violating the copyright agreement with the makers of the map editors (I am assuming that everyone must agree to the same terms of agreement that came with my copy of the map editor, that states that the editor and the things that are made with it are for free distribution only), and if not, then they are using the maps for all intents and purposes, for the purpose for which they were made. While it is not right that someone should take a download without due permission and respect to its makers and host, there seems to be little that can be done to ultimately prevent it, and by restricting the downloads to a select few, it seems to me it would only hinder this site from gaining new members due to the intimidating demands, thereby causing prospective users to seek another place to participate. This is only my personal feelings. I am aware that I am very new to this site, and that there may be more to this than I know, or can fully comprehend. I am sure that the administrators of this site have only this website and its user’s welfare at heart and are trying, and will continue tying, to do the best they can to better the experience of their fellow fans and members.

Ray,
I think you are correct in what should happen about this issue. There are a lot of members who participate in the hunts, post in the froums and take part in Team Speak which I think is a vital part of Hagadoo. I wish more members were as dedicated as some of our members are. Not to mention the countless hours that our members take to make the maps for this site and I know they are appreciated by all of us.
Thats my opinion,
Dave

Hagadoo is a private site for members only. It is not open to the public, Therefore I set the rules and run it the way I feel best. With that said, Hagadoo is not here for the general public, it is here for someone who wants to show up, hunt, socialize & have fun. We give all the help needed in all areas freely, its never a bother. I (We) do not help those who come here to take our content to other hunting sites. This was evident when this thread was first started (Mar, 2010). I would have locked the whole D/L section up if I had the support of other people I look for guidance in the community. It was their input that stopped me from doing so.
Misty, If you want help making maps, hunting the game or understanding it better, we will help you But protecting the content that others have given the site is my responsibility that I take seriously. When I see D/L'd content leaving & going elsewhere, my feathers get ruffled quickly.

Welcome Misty, I think if you stick around awhile, join in the weekly hunts and get to know the members and staff you will see why it is the best hunting site on the web. The staff here is the best and is there almost 24/7 to help in any aspect of you hunting needs.

I think that perhaps I have been misunderstood; I do think that this site's downloads should be restricted to its members, I just think that it would a bit unfair to the new members if they could not participate in the downloads without first trying to earn the favor of other members. And I am with REZ325, in that I do think that everything that can be done, should be, to prevent people from taking content from this site to be posted on other sites. I do find it somewhat refreshing to find a site with administrators who care what is posted on their site, and who take their responsibilities seriously.
As for building maps, I have spent hours reading forms on how to build a map after I found the tutorial that came with the map editor hard to understand. I finally figured out how to place water on my maps, but I have only completed one rough map, and I am going on my second week of attempting to building a detailed map. And despite the time that I have put into it, I am just now finishing placing my fields. And I have looked into joining the weekly hunts, but I am fully not sure how to go about doing that, plus my computer uses Vista, and I can not get it to take any screen shots. However, I guess that I should post these issues on the help forms as soon as I find them.
