My name is Mike Richey, I live in the northern part of Illinois 30 miles between Chicago IL. and Milwaukee Wis. I moved here from South Carolina in 1996 and never looked back. I have been a hunter now for about 30 years starting with my father in my teen age years, whitetail deer hunting with a bow is all I now do.
In 1998 my better half (Here out will be referred to as The Huntress) brought home this intriguing game called "Deer Hunter" she knew my love of hunting and PC games giving this to me as a gift. I was thrilled, never had I had such a wonderful time playing a hunting game on my computer, the little game got me hooked. I played this game almost everyday never had I enjoyed a PC game as much as this one, the sounds, graphics and game play were just cool at that time. Late 1999 found us shopping in Sams Club and I accidentally ran across a copy of Deer Hunter 2, graphics, sound and game play in this one blew the first one away, I was in heaven!
As I am sitting playing Deer Hunter 2 one night just having a time looking at my trophies a thought ran through my head: "Would it not be great if I could set up a tournament similar to a real life local big buck contest?" That same night I scratched out a brief plan on a fan site I had thrown together on a freebie web hosting service. Sunstorm the creators of both games by this time had a fairly active online community for Deer hunter 2, I posted my idea there getting a great response. I went over my idea with The Huntress and her suggestion first should be a better web site as she to thought this make take off in the community. Were we ever right, the third tournament we had fifty entries two from other countries, we were having a blast but then it got better. WizardWorks the company that did the selling of these games had employees that followed the online community, one producer contacted us with the news WizardWorks wanted to donate prizes to our winners. This was big news giving our site and contests a big shot in the arm. I then noticed others interested in holding there own contests and the next thing you knew several sites were up and running, this tournament PC hunting got very popular.
The next step in this saga turned out to be a huge thrill for me, a lot of interest in the community seem to focus on new hunting areas for Deer Hunter 2. Not sure of the date but it was announced there would be a new game sort of an extended season it was being called. In this release 4 new hunting areas were included along with Sunstorm map editor in which players could now create their own hunting spots. I pushed hard for the release of the editor, it took a bit to get the hang of it as Sunstorm offered no "official" support, our tournaments then took on a whole new look. Specialty maps created by me for the contests each month, I got so wrapped up in map making I almost forgot to play the game.
Later WizardWorks released what was called the "Monster Buck Pack" this is where I and The Huntress had our first "hands on" if you will, the company invited me to create five new maps for its release. The user created maps also got to be very popular and some in the community were having issues, installing, moving many maps, The Huntress created a utility called "MapMover" that was also included in the Monster Buck pack. We were happy with the way our little project had taken off so fast and the great thing was people loved it. Could it get better? We were then invited with others from the community to beta test the next game which was Deer Hunter 3, a challenge and a lot of fun we had in the community doing this, it even blossomed into testing DH3 Gold, Buckmasters Top Bow, Rocky Mountain Trophy Hunter 2, Bird Hunter Upland, Bird Hunter Wild Wings, and I even got on the testing of High Impact Paintball, Dirt Track Racing and Dirt Track Racing Sprint Cars.
