Hello! I was wondering if there was anyway to make DH 2004 maps work in 2005. Out of nowhere, my DH2004 game started lagging like crazy, so it looks like I will need to move to 2005. However, there are a few maps, most of which I made, that I dont want to lose. Would 2004 maps work in 2005? I'm assuming not....

Short answer is no.
The DH2004 files can not be read by the 2005 editor. the majority of them are in a different format.
The map has to be completely remade in the 2005 editor to run in the 2005 game.

Some of the files like the hi field and texture files can be accessed by opening the 2004 editor and loading them to a custom map the from the file browser then use the snipping tool to make a copy that can be resized, enhanced in a photo editing program, then converted to the 05 format and loaded back into 05 editor as a bitmap in the texture or object placement tools.

The Hi field values are different between the editors so when the hifield is placed in 05 terrain editor as a png grayscale bitmap, the world height has to be adjusted upward visually until the terrain height matches the original 04 terrain.
Some 04 files also have to be flipped vertically and horizontally to overlay correctly on the 05 terrain editor map.
Its a long and difficult process as all the object placements have to be done by hand, each individual tree, rock etc placed with a mouse click.
The result will only be as good as your patience and accuracy will allow.

Having the 04 models in the Hybrid patch makes it feasibly possible to make a copy of an 04 map in 05.
It also helps that my computer is able to open and run both the 04 game and the 05 editor simultaneously and run both screens on my desktop side by side to see where the objects should be placed.


While I have done Kansas 2015 ( DH2005 hybrid whitetail )  and Alberta 2015 ( Dh2005 hybrid Mule )  they are not exact copies and close study of the original 04 and my 05 versions will be like a spot the difference puzzle where it will be easier to spot the same. But the impression of sameness is strong enough to pass.

Then of course the in final analysis having done all that work you no longer have an 04 map but an 05 map with all the attendant gameplay features and animal behaviors of any other 05 map.

If you still have your custom folders for any of the maps you made and want to run as 2005 maps, you can open the folder, copy the hi field into a new custom map in 2005 editor and load it as a bitmap, then go from there and put your textures and objects on the map as if you were making a new map, using your old 2004 folder and 2004 editor as a guide for object types and placements.
