Thanks for the reply Gas, when I get a spare minute, I'll try reinstalling things again and start over. I have a downloaded version which I think I still may have the install exe in my downloads folder.

Its just so frustrating when things work fine for awhile, nothing gets changed on my computer as far as I know, and then this problem keeps popping up. Everything is cleaned and I'm the only user so I know what goes on and off of it. I'll post again after I've had some time to work on it, thanks!

LogJumper here,
Have been reading the posts on win7 problems with the DH2005 Editor. Ran across something called 'Windows XP mode' for Windows 7 Pro. Not sure if something like that would help the mapmakers in loading different files. Not sure the thing  would work or not, but it might be something to look into. I downloaded the program from the Microsoft web site; haven't installed it yet, but am thinking about it just so I can run some of the older XP/ME games that I truly enjoyed in the past.
Let me know if this helps with your problems if you decide to look into the program, ok? Just curious about it is all.  Surprised

P.S. You may have to search for the file/program on the Internet, ok?

@Logjumper.....       Windows XP Mode is a virtual mode that comes with the operating system windows 7 professional.    You have to upgrade your Win 7 to Win  7 pro 1st before you can use XP mode  or  virtual mode.
I use windows 7 pro and use Xp mode which is a 32 bit system.   Win 7 is a 64 bit system, and I use the DH2005 Editor.  And have tried it in XP mode also.  The same problems exist on either system.
Now if you can figure out the fonts problem with windows 7 compatability you would make a lot of people happy.  And it's not just unmarking clear type that will make it work properly.  I have some problems with
other older Editing programs as well running on XP mode.           Good Luck and hope you find the answer.                                                                                     Gas56

Gas56:  I am running Windows 7 Pro, but do not (and don't know anything about map-making), was just making a comment about the possibility of using such a program that Might help. As for the font problem, I don't know anything about that, either, but just might pose the problem on the website [Ask {dot.com}]. Who knows, there might be someone out there that has figured  it out, right?  Any way, thank you for the info.
Hope the problem(s) are overcome for one and all.....

I'm using Win7 Ultimate which is basically Pro with a few additions. I've tried using the xp compatibility mode as mentioned in a previous post but it didn't seem to do any good. Thanks for the suggestions though LogJumper.

I'll post more if I figure anything out and as I get a chance to work on it. My computer time is severely limited at the moment.  Very Happy

I'm at a loss..  Sad

I've completely reinstalled the game, the patches, and the editor and I'm still having this problem. Almost every model in the game is giving me the same error where there are extra weird characters on the end of file extension.

I spent 2hrs this morning trying everything I can think of. I've run a registry cleaner, I've run a disk check, I've scanned for malware and viruses, I've check and rechecked the permissions on every single folder and item in the Atari Folder, I've defragged several times, I've unchecked the clear type font, and nothing.

I think I may have to just purchase a small hd, install xp on it, and finish my maps on that hd. Unless someone has any more suggestions? Crying or Very sad

Thank you Gas56, I appreciate you trying to help out!

I did order a refurbished drive and will put a copy of XP on it to see how that goes...I'm really sick of fighting with Win7...I guess it just reinforces why I run MacOS on my primary drive and all my work computers.  Shocked

Pretty funny when you think of it...dropping $30 bucks on a drive to play a game I paid $9.99 for that is older than dirt! Laughing

@DRwhitetail       Yeah, just goes to show you how popular the DH2005 game actually was at one point and time.   I still haven't received 1 reply at the Win 7 forums as of yet, but my eyes are wide open Rolling Eyes

I do believe I have finally solved the dreaded extra character bug that has been causing
problems for many of our map makers, and that has resulted in many giving up on their
map making efforts.

Specifically it is a conflict between the editor and the apple softwares.
particularly I believe, to do with the predictive text system on phones and tablets.

With Win8 and Win10 and with some Win7 Operating Systems the apple i tunes and its
accompanying software is pre-installed as part of the basic O.S .system.

My Win7 O.S. did not come with Apple programs, but because I have a tablet I downloaded
I tunes and its sister programs along with Syncios in order to be able to move files and
Apps between the storage cards on the tablet. Even with an android system i tunes is
required along with a file manager to do this,( by connecting the tablet to a computer to
move the files fron one storage card to another within the tablets system ).

After installing the apple software I started having the extra character bug while trying
to load objects in the DH2005 editor file browser. Up untill then my editor had been running fine.

The solution was not immediately obvious to me, as I did not attempt to make a map for
almost a month after the install but after struggling through two subsequent maps, using the
tricks I had developed in Win10 ( Unfortunately they dont work every time )
I decided to look back and see what programs I had installed that might have caused the problem.

Between the date of the last succesful run with the editor and when the problen started I found
only the Apple software had been installed.

So in a fit of rage and frustration I ripped out anything with Apple inc as publisher, from my
progams and features list.

And now my DH2005 Editor is running perfectly again. ( I.E. as well as any DH2005 editor will
ever run anyway ).

So, If you are having or had this problem with your DH2005 editor you might try this solution.
You could try uninstalling each apple product separately to find out if it is specifically one
of their 4 programs, but honestly, who cares, who needs Apple software on a win computer anyway.

Uninstall instructions here

Works For me.
